LZ Lambeau Honor Ride at FC Stadium
Posted by Lynn Peters on 4/19/10
Have you heard about the LZ Lambeau event on the weekend of May 21-23? More formally called “Landing Zone Lambeau,” it’s a belated welcome home event for Vietnam Veterans. The bulk of the event will be at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, but a large motorcycle honor ride will be staged at Fox Cities Stadium on the morning of Friday, May 21. Honor riders will travel across the state and they’re expected to arrive at Fox Cities Stadium around 10.

Want to watch the motorcycles and the HUEY helicopter that's joining them? My advice is to park at FVTC and walk the bridge across Hwy. 41 to the stadium. As I said, they arrive around 10 a.m. and are scheduled to head off to Green Bay, with State Patrol escorts, around 12:30 p.m.

How many motorcycles will there be? It’s hard to say, but rumor has it there'll be a lot!
Another Wisconsin Premiere!
Posted by Lynn Peters on 4/12/10
The big news here is that "Jersey Boys!" will be coming to the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center. A smash hit on Broadway, it's the story of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons and its Wisconsin premiere will be in the Fox Cities. Not Milwaukee, not Madison . . . the Fox Cities. It's not 'til 2011, but group tickets are on sale now.

And if you haven't seen "Wicked" yet, it's making its second appearance in the Fox Cities next January.

Vintique: not your usual clothing
Posted by Lynn Peters on 4/6/10
I was in Neenah with my sister recently and stumbled upon Vintique. What attracted us were the wonderful women’s clothes in the window . . . fun, funky and retro, and totally gorgeous. The store features hats, scarves and coats, but I think Vintique’s real claim to fame is its amazing dresses. They look antique, but are brand new.

On the second floor of the store you’ll find honest-to-goodness vintage clothes. Got a thing for Lucille Ball or a secret desire to be a Hippie? This is your spot. And even if you don’t, it’s a blast for browsing!

Check it out on YouTube.
Wiouwash Trail
Posted by Lynn Peters on 3/30/10
With the warm weather giving me an itch to spend time outdoors, I met my friend Jean last Saturday for a pleasant walk on the Wiouwash Trail. The trail runs just west of the Fox Cities and despite its proximity to town, feels decidedly rural. Deer, birds, rabbits squirrels, turkeys and other wildlife make themselves at home at its edges. Although we were walking, we met several bicyclists along our way and have often seen horseback riders as well.

The Wiouwash passes through the Fox Cities in the Town of Clayton, heading north to Hortonville and south to Oshkosh with a total length of 22 miles. Although the trail isn't paved, it's currently in excellent condition for walking or biking. Well behaved dogs are welcome on the trail.

I wholeheartedly recommend it!

Spring Break Ideas
Posted by Pam Seidl on 3/25/10
My kids have the worst parents in the world....we're NOT taking them to some tropical locale for Spring Break this year, even though ALL of their friends are going (insert eye roll here).

I'm sure there's maybe one or two other families planning on staying a little closer to home this spring break, so here's some ideas and specials in the Fox Cities you may want to know about:

Badger Sports Park is offering a "save big spring break special" that inlcudes laser tag, go-karting, mini-golf and batting cages.

The History Museum at the Castle has a new exhibit called "Postcards from Main Street" that is very cool. Check out the "Sports & Spirit" and A.K.A. Houdini exhibits while you're there.

The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers open their 2010 season on April 8th at Fox Cities Stadium.

Bergstrom-Mahler Museum will open a new exhibit "Wizards of Pop: the art of pop-up books" on April 10th.

Finally, several area hotels are offering Easter and Spring Break room specials. Check them out on our hotel specials page.
Postcards from the Edge
Posted by Lynn Peters on 3/24/10
On Monday I trotted over to the History Museum at the Castle to see a new exhibit. Called "Picturing Main Street," it's full of antique postcards of Fox Cities downtowns and I think it'll hold special appeal for those who've lived here for awhile or used to live here.

For those just visiting, however, the exhibit includes the interesting story of how postcards came to be. There's also an opportunity for you to hand-color a free postcard, buy a 30-cent stamp and mail your card right there . . . a fun thing for kids or adults. I colored one and mailed it to my co-workers, and I'm expecting it to arrive today!
Rocks!
Posted by Lynn Peters on 3/10/10
Want to know what I'm doing this weekend? I'm going to stop in at "Fox Rocks," a mineral, fossil and jewelry show at UW-Fox Valley. In addition to ogling interesting rocks, there will be dealers selling reasonably priced jewelry, and interesting fossils and minerals. (The jewelery is my thing.)

Take your kids, because there are plenty of kid-friendly activities.

The show is March 13 and 14 and admission is free. During the show, admission to the Weis Earth Science Museum, also on the campus of UW-Fox Valley, is half-price. Need details? Call (920) 832-2925.
Mi Familia
Posted by Pam Seidl on 3/8/10
Mi familia y yo comio en el restaurante "Mi Familia" en Menasha... Ok so much for that Spanish minor.

Mi Familia is on Tayco Street in Menasha. The location has housed a number of small restaurants, but nothing seems to have lasted. I think Mi Familia will. The food was great with some offerings that I hadn't seen before in other mexican restaurants in the area.

I have to admit that from the outside, the building isn't much to write home about, but inside it's bright and cheery. Space is at a premium so you might have to wait at the bar and enjoy one of their from scratch margaritas on busy evenings, darn!

We'll defnintely be back.

Niagara Escarpment
Posted by Lynn Peters on 2/26/10
Although you might think of the Fox Cities as an urban area, we're blessed with High Cliff State Park, a beautiful 1,200-acre park nestled along the Northeastern shore of Lake Winnebago. The name "High Cliff" comes from the park's limestone cliffs, which are part of the Niagara Escarpment.

Often called "the ledge" or "the bluff," the escarpment is a huge geological feature that extends across much of North America. It provides a stunning backdrop to the wonderful camping, hiking, swimming and sailing at High Cliff State Park.
